Metal Gear Solid 3D on for early 2012

AppId is over the quota

Following a disappointing delay out of 2011, series creator Hideo Kojima has announced that Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D will be launching in early 2012. That includes Japan, where it was said to still be on track for this year.

The developer’s other update, the Zone of the Enders HD Collection, will hit in early to mid 2012 too. And if that’s all too far away for anyone then there’s always the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection due in November.

Capcom refused Inafune offer to work on Mega Man Legends 3

AppId is over the quota

Mega Man creator and industry legend Keiji Inafune left Capcom last year with several projects left unfinished. Mega Man Legends 3 was one such project, a game that was cancelled back in July.

But now new information about the cancellation has come to light, revealing that Inafune himself tried to cooperate with Capcom in order to continue working on the game. ”I wanted to leave Capcom to recharge my energy, and support Capcom from there, but it seems they don’t allow it. I want to make all my effort to keep Legends 3 alive, but I’m really not sure I can do it,” he revealed to 4gamer.net (via).

It’s definitely a shame that an agreement couldn’t be reached, but we’re also excited about Inafune’s new, original projects.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 to get DLC

While there wasn’t any for its predecessor, Final Fantasy XIII-2 will have downloadable content.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase confirmed as much at the Tokyo Game Show last week, promising downloadable costumes, monsters, and weapons, some of which may be dished out as pre-order bonuses. No word on any possible story additions though.

As announced some days ago, the game’s out in Japan this December, and in January/February 2012 in NA/EU.

Valve not interested in mobile, handhelds

AppId is over the quota

Valve is all “about people sitting on their couches or at their desks,” Chet Faliszek, a writer at the Half-Life creator has said, summing up the developer’s not-interested-in-mobile-development attitude quite nicely.

That means no iPhone, iPad nor Android games from the famed studio. Same goes for more traditional handhelds as well.

“We haven’t forayed into that space,” Faliszek told Kotaku when asked if PlayStation Vita could perhaps be considered as a viable platform for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, which is due out on PC, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network early next year; around the time of Vita’s western launch. “It’s just not a space our engine has been looked at or optimized for.”

And that’s all there is to it. Don’t expect a Valve game on any smartphone, tablet, or handheld anytime soon.

Devil’s Third reveal in 2012

AppId is over the quota

Ninja Gaiden man Tomonobu Itagaki’s upcoming THQ project, Devil’s Third, will come out of hiding next year, the creator told Japanese press at the Tokyo Game Show last week.

Absent from the show due to a PR strategy surrounding the game’s release schedule, the “epic masterpiece” is at the moment 20-30 percent complete and progressing well, Gamespot reports on a Famitsu interview.

Curiously, the game was said to be at 30 percent this June.

There are no clues as to during what event the game might be shown, if any, but expect things to be even more fast-paced than they were in the debut trailer.

Devil’s Third was announced at E3 2010. It’s Currently expected to ship anywhere between March next year and March 2013.

Skyrim rated Mature in US, has drinking games

AppId is over the quota

Bethesda will taking the Elder Scrolls series to darker places than ever with Skyrim. That is if the US rating board’s Mature certificate is anything to go by (via Eurogamer).

The ESRB’s reasoning for their high rating is quite surprising. Apparently the game has a reference to rape among other things like drinking contests and (less surprisingly) blood and gore. An in-detail description even makes mention of slow motion decapitations.

It’s surprising to see some of that stuff will be covered in Skyrim, but that just makes us more excited to see how Bethesda handle it.

The game launches on PC, PS3 and 360 on November 11.

Welcome to our BioShock Infinite Screenshots Gallery!

BioShock Infinite is an upcoming first-person shooter video game, and the third game in the BioShock series. It is being developed by Irrational Games for a 2012 release on the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

BioShock Infinite is not a direct sequel or prequel to previous BioShock games, taking place in an earlier period and different setting, though it features similar gameplay concepts and themes. The player controls a former Pinkerton agent, Booker DeWitt, as he attempts to rescue a woman named Elizabeth trapped aboard the collapsing air-city Columbia in 1912.

It is here that we will post the latest screencaps and artwork from the game. Many of the screenshots could also make great desktop images!

EA Visceral Melbourne facing closure

AppId is over the quota

Today, EA Visceral Melbourne staff is meeting with human resources personnel to address what unfortunately might be the last days of the studio’s existence; EA’s Australian limb of Visceral Games is facing closure.

Having worked on critically acclaimed Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space among others, this is a sad thing to be writing about.

Just before the weekend hit, the International Game Developers Association of Melbourne, or IGDA Melbourne, left an alarming tweet on the internets implying the fate of the studio seems to be irreversible. ”More sad news emerging about #EAVisceral Melbourne studio closure. Happy to help all affected in any way we can,” it read.

Making an already bad situation even worse is the fact that EA Visceral Melbourne was working on an unannounced AAA title based on a new IP, which is something we sorely need in a world of prequels and sequels. According to reports, EA Games Label’s Patrick Söderlund did not deem this title profitable and cancelled it, and the studio, altogether.

PS Vita not region locked

AppId is over the quota

Twitter’s delivered another quick burst of good, if expected, news; PlayStation Vita will be region free.

“Yes, it is,” Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida replied when asked if the handheld is confirmed as region free.

As is the case with the PSP and PS3, physical copies of games can be imported and played on any console then, making it tempting to order the hardware from Japan this year, seeing as the device won’t make its official western debut until after New Years celebrations.

Vita’s out in Japan on December 17th. The US/EU launch is targeted at early 2012.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Storyline

AppId is over the quota
Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary Logo

With the release of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary on the horizon, here are some early story details, which we can expect to see in the game!

A remaster of the original Xbox classic title, Halo: Combat Evolved, Anniversary follows the same plot established in the first installment.

Take a look at the Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary E3 2011 Debut Trailer!

Halo takes place in a science fiction universe created by Bungie Studios. The overpopulation of Earth and the realization of faster-than-light travel have caused the human race to colonize other planets. A keystone of these efforts is the planet Reach, an interstellar naval yard and a hub of scientific and military activity. A secret military endeavor, dubbed the SPARTAN Project, was established on Reach to create an army of biologically engineered, cyborg “super-soldiers”. Twenty-seven years before the beginning of the game, a technologically advanced collective of alien races, the Covenant, began to attack human settlements, declaring humanity an affront to their gods.

The titular Halo is an enormous, ring-shaped artificial space habitat/planet, which (according to Bungie Studios) has a diameter of ten thousand kilometers. Halo sits at a Lagrange point between a planet and its moon. Centrifugal force created by the rotation of the station provides the ring’s gravity.

The player character is Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, one of the few surviving super-soldiers of the SPARTAN-II project, and the main character of the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Accompanying the Master Chief is the Pillar of Autumn’s feminine artificial intelligence construct, Cortana, who resides in a neural implant connected to his battle armor, codenamed MJOLNIR Mark V. The Pillar of Autumn’s captain, Jacob Keyes, is also a major character. Playing a mainly antagonistic role in the game’s events is 343 Guilty Spark, an eccentric artificial intelligence responsible for monitoring and maintaining Halo’s systems.

Hell bent on humankind’s extermination, a powerful fellowship of alien races known as the Covenant is wiping out Earth’s fledgling interstellar empire. You and the other surviving defenders of a devastated colony make a desperate attempt to lure the alien fleet away from Earth.

Shot down and marooned on the ancient ring-world Halo, you begin a guerilla-war against the Covenant. Fight for humanity against an alien onslaught as you race to uncover the mysteries of Halo.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary will hit shelves in American on November 15th 2011! There have been no announcements yet regarding the release-date of the European release.

The Avengers: The Video Game Cancelled

AppId is over the quota
The Avengers Video Game Logo

It looks as though The Avengers: The Video Game has been cancelled for fear of revealing too much information on the locales, info and baddies from the forthcoming Marvel superhero ensemble coming our way in May 2012!

As some of you may remember, THQ cancelled its MX vs ATV and Red Faction series among other titles back in August resulting in the loss of over 200 jobs. Apparently one of these cancelled projects was a first-person superhero game that was to tie into the upcoming Avengers movie.

We do know that The Avengers: The Video Game was at least being pitched, if not developed, for PS3, Xbox 360, and the PC. But at least one developer has confirmed that the game has been completely canceled, though the status of the license is unclear.

In the wake of an information leak regarding the plot, formidable foes and secret locations of the game (and possibly its movie counterpart), the game was hurriedly swept under the rug. No official statement has been released however on why the title has been scrapped.

Check out what the game could have looked like in this Pre-Alpha Footage video!

Or take a look at this tantalizing teaser for The Avengers Movie!

Could a possible third entry in the Nanosuit-powered shooter series appear on yet another platform, then?

Were hoping Infinity Ward and Activision would still announce a Prestige Edition for this November’s Modern Warfare 3? Such additions have after all accompanied the launches of both 2009's Modern Warfare 2 and last year’s Black Ops..

Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling delivered the news via Twitter: “There is no Prestige Edition, only a Hardened Edition for MW3.”

The $100 Hardened Edition will have to do this year, then.

What do you think?

Does the First Amendment allowing free speech also allow EA to use athlete’s likeness without paying them? Should those players be entitled to payment? Are you impressed that a young girl was able to affect gender options in a video game? Do you agree that more games should have a gender option? Have you ever played an Angry Birds game? Are you, or have you ever been, afflicted with “Angry Birds Addiction Syndrome”?
