EA confirms Visceral Melbourne closure

AppId is over the quota

EA has confirmed previous reports of it shutting down its Visceral Melbourne studio. News of the move first came via Twitter over the weekend, but it’s as official as can be now.

“With no active project in development at that location, we’ve decided to close the Visceral Melbourne office,” an EA rep tells MCV. “They are talented individuals and may find other roles elsewhere in EA, if they choose.”

“EA continues to maintain its mobile studios in Melbourne which are both thriving and hiring.”

EA Visceral Melbourne facing closure

AppId is over the quota

Today, EA Visceral Melbourne staff is meeting with human resources personnel to address what unfortunately might be the last days of the studio’s existence; EA’s Australian limb of Visceral Games is facing closure.

Having worked on critically acclaimed Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space among others, this is a sad thing to be writing about.

Just before the weekend hit, the International Game Developers Association of Melbourne, or IGDA Melbourne, left an alarming tweet on the internets implying the fate of the studio seems to be irreversible. ”More sad news emerging about #EAVisceral Melbourne studio closure. Happy to help all affected in any way we can,” it read.

Making an already bad situation even worse is the fact that EA Visceral Melbourne was working on an unannounced AAA title based on a new IP, which is something we sorely need in a world of prequels and sequels. According to reports, EA Games Label’s Patrick Söderlund did not deem this title profitable and cancelled it, and the studio, altogether.

Bodycount studio facing closure

AppId is over the quota

Codemaster’s Guildford Studio – which is responsible for the poorly-received Bodycount – has begun a 30 day consultation period, at the end of which the studio will close.

The studio has also developed the Operation Flashpoint games. It would seem that instead the publisher now wants to focus its attention on racing games, given its success with franchises like Dirt and F1.

“As Codemasters looks to take greater leadership in the racing category, the company is proposing a studio structure that adds resource and strengthens our best-in-class racing teams. The output from the studios on the Warwickshire campus and in Birmingham is on the increase with multiple continuing,” a statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz reads.

“Both the Warwickshire and Birmingham studios have won BAFTAs for their critically acclaimed, multi-million selling titles and the company is adding resource to ensure they constantly over achieve in this competitive sector.”

As for the 66 staff that are affected by this closure, Codies says they’re just as welcome to apply for positions at other studios.

“Codemasters envisages that it will continue to have a number of open positions within the Racing and Online studio teams at Codemasters’ campus in Warwickshire working on Dirt, Grid, F1 Online and with the F1 team in Birmingham, which is being expanded to house a full second team working on a new racing IP.”

So it would seem that we’re not only losing a developer, but any chance of another shooter from Codemasters.
