Tetris: Axis for 3DS has been announced by Nintendo as an all-new Tetris game that will make use of the unique features of the Nintendo 3DS.

Because Tetris Game Boy was the original launch game that propelled the Game Boy to infamy, and the DS had a big hit with Tetris DS, Nintendo felt it was time to put their own Mii-ified 3DS spin on the classic block dropper puzzle game.

Tetris: Axis promises glasses-free stereoscopic 3D graphics, 20 different game modes, 8-player play over local wireless using only one game card, online multiplayer support for one game mode, SpotPass support, and a cool new Augmented Reality feature that makes use of the 3DS Cameras.

Tetris: Axis is a major holiday game for 3DS for the end of the year, and joins other megatons including Super Mario 3D Land (releasing in November), Mario Kart 7 (releasing in December) and Pokemon Rumble Blast (releasing on October 24th).

I’ll post a trailer of the game as soon as one is available, but here is a look at Tetris DS, which used classic Nintendo properties in interesting ways. Here is the Metroid theme!

Hopefully Tetris: Axis will do some similar cool things.
